Doppler lidar

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005097

A remote sensing instrument that uses laser light to measure the velocity of aerosols and small particles in the atmosphere, thereby inferring wind speed and direction. It emits pulses of laser light and detects the Doppler frequency shift of the backscattered signal from these atmospheric tracers. Doppler lidar systems are used for high-resolution wind profiling, especially in clear air conditions and for aviation safety.
