An acronym for Light Detection and Ranging, a remote sensing technology that uses pulsed laser light to measure distances to a target. In atmospheric science, lidar systems are used to profile aerosols, clouds, and atmospheric gases by detecting backscattered light. It provides high-resolution vertical profiles of atmospheric constituents.
