Laser ceilometer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006884
An instrument that uses a laser beam to determine cloud base height by measuring the time it takes for a pulse of light to travel from the instrument to the cloud base and back. It emits a vertical laser pulse and detects the backscattered signal from cloud droplets or ice crystals. Modern ceilometers can often detect multiple cloud layers and provide vertical visibility information.
