Ceiling-height indicator
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004213
An instrument that projects a modulated beam of light vertically onto a cloud base and measures the height by analyzing the reflected signal. A detector, located a known distance from the projector, measures the angle of the reflected light spot to calculate the cloud base height via triangulation. Modern automated versions, known as ceilometers, use a pulsed laser and measure the travel time of the light pulse to determine the height.
