Photoionization
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008882
The process by which an atom or molecule loses an electron upon absorbing a photon with energy greater than its ionization energy. This leads to the formation of an ion and a free electron. It is a fundamental process in mass spectrometry, photoelectron spectroscopy, and atmospheric chemistry.
