Photoionization cross section

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008883

A measure of the probability that an atom or molecule will absorb a photon and subsequently eject an electron. This value depends on the energy of the incident photon and the electronic structure of the species. It is typically expressed in units of area, such as square centimeters (cm^2) or megabarns (Mb).
