Photodetachment
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008844
The loss of an electron by an anion that has absorbed a photon, which leaves behind a neutral atom or molecule. The photon energy must exceed the electron affinity of that neutral species, so the threshold energy gives the electron affinity. Removing an electron from a neutral species to give a cation is called photoionization instead.
