Autodetachment
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000967
The spontaneous process in which an electron is ejected from an anion, resulting in a neutral atom or molecule. This occurs without any external influence like collision or photoabsorption, happening when the anion is in an excited state with energy greater than the electron affinity of the corresponding neutral species. Autodetachment is observable in mass spectrometry as it leads to the appearance of neutral particles from an ion beam, and the lifetime of the process can range from microseconds to seconds.
