Photoexcitation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008868
The process where an atom, molecule, or ion absorbs a photon, causing an electron to transition from a lower energy state to a higher energy state. This absorption of light energy promotes the species to an excited electronic configuration. The excited state is typically short-lived, and the species subsequently relaxes by emitting light (fluorescence or phosphorescence) or undergoing a chemical reaction.
