Fluorescence lifetime
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004519
The average time a molecule remains in its excited electronic state after absorbing a photon, before returning to the ground state by emitting a photon of fluorescence. It is the reciprocal of the sum of the rates of all deactivation processes from the excited state. This parameter is sensitive to the local environment of the fluorophore and is measured in nanoseconds.
