Fluorescence
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004516
A type of photoluminescence involving the emission of light from a molecule or atom that has absorbed electromagnetic radiation. The emission occurs as the species relaxes from an excited electronic singlet state to a lower energy state, almost immediately after the absorption of the excitation energy. The process is characterized by a very short lifetime of the excited state, on the order of 1 to 100 nanoseconds.
