Fluorescence
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-005653
A type of photoluminescence where a substance absorbs light or other electromagnetic energy and then re-emits it at a longer wavelength. The emission of light ceases almost immediately after the excitation source is removed, typically within nanoseconds. This phenomenon is used in atmospheric science for remote sensing instruments, such as lidar, to measure concentrations of specific gases and aerosols.
