Excitation
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013089
The process of raising an atom, molecule, or ion from its ground electronic state to a higher energy state by absorbing energy. This transition occurs when the entity absorbs a photon or collides with another particle, such as an electron or another atom, transferring the required amount of energy. The excited state is unstable, and the entity returns to a lower state by emitting radiation or through non-radiative processes.
