Excitation energy

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-004181

The minimum amount of energy required to promote an atom, molecule, or ion from its ground electronic state to a higher, excited electronic state. This energy corresponds to the difference in energy between the two states. It is a quantized value, meaning only specific amounts of energy can be absorbed to cause an excitation.
