Charge inversion reaction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001900

An encounter of an ion with a neutral species, a surface, or an ion of opposite polarity that leaves the product ion with a charge of reversed sign, for example a cation turned into an anion by capturing two electrons from an alkali metal target. In mass spectrometry it gives structural information on the precursor, and it differs from charge exchange, in which the charge keeps its sign.
