Ionization efficiency curve

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-006125

A graph of how many ions of a given mass form, plotted against the kinetic energy of the ionizing electrons, or the photon energy in photoionization, applied to the sample. The onset of the curve gives the ionization energy of the molecule, and the thresholds at which fragment ions appear reveal their appearance energies and the fragmentation pathways. Photoionization versions, built from tunable monochromatic light, show sharper onsets than electron-impact ones, which are blurred by the energy spread of the electron beam.
