Nitriles

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-007958

Organic compounds containing a cyano functional group, which consists of a carbon atom triply bonded to a nitrogen atom (C≡N). The carbon atom of the cyano group is also bonded to an organic residue. Nitriles are formally derivatives of carboxylic acids, where the -COOH group is replaced by -C≡N, and are named with the suffix "nitrile" or by prefixing "cyano-" to the parent hydrocarbon.
