Cyanohydrins

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002811

Organic compounds formed by the reaction of an aldehyde or ketone with hydrogen cyanide, resulting in a molecule containing both a hydroxyl group and a cyano group attached to the same carbon atom. These compounds are intermediates in the synthesis of alpha-hydroxy carboxylic acids and amino acids. The reaction is typically catalyzed by a base.
