Cyanogenic

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002810

Describing a substance or organism capable of producing hydrogen cyanide (HCN), a highly toxic compound. Many plants contain cyanogenic glycosides, which release HCN upon enzymatic hydrolysis, serving as a defense mechanism against herbivores. The toxicity of cyanogenic compounds is due to their ability to inhibit cellular respiration.
