Aldehydes
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000372
A class of organic compounds characterized by a carbonyl group (a carbon-oxygen double bond) where the carbonyl carbon atom is bonded to at least one hydrogen atom. The general formula is R−CHO, where R is a hydrogen atom or a hydrocarbyl group. Aldehydes are named by replacing the final -e of the parent alkane's name with the suffix -al, as in methanal (formaldehyde).
