Oxylium ions

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008408

Cations of the form RO+, in which an oxygen atom bearing a single substituent carries the positive charge and has a sextet of electrons, as in methoxylium, CH3O+, and hydroxylium, HO+. They are highly electron-deficient. Oxonium ions differ in having a trivalent positively charged oxygen, as in H3O+.
