Bent's rule
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-012919
A principle in chemistry that describes the relationship between the hybridization of a central atom and the electronegativity of its substituents. It states that atomic s character concentrates in orbitals directed towards electropositive substituents, while p character concentrates in orbitals directed towards electronegative substituents. This rule explains observed bond angles and lengths in molecules.
