Carbo-reduction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001657

A chemical reaction in which a metal oxide is reduced to its elemental metal form using carbon as the reducing agent at high temperatures. The carbon, often in the form of coke or charcoal, is oxidized to carbon monoxide or carbon dioxide while the metal cation gains electrons. This high-temperature process is a cornerstone of extractive metallurgy, for instance in the production of iron from iron ore in a blast furnace.
