Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-002791

A vertical, cylindrical furnace used for melting metals, primarily for producing cast iron, though it can be used for some nonferrous alloys. A charge of metal, coke, and flux is fed into the top of the furnace, and hot air is blown in through nozzles called tuyeres near the bottom to facilitate combustion and melting. Molten metal and slag are collected at the bottom and tapped off through separate spouts.
