Open hearth furnace
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008251
A type of metallurgical furnace used for making steel, characterized by a shallow, open-hearth design where the charge is heated by direct flame and radiant heat from the roof. It operates on a regenerative principle, preheating combustion air and fuel gas with exhaust gases to achieve high temperatures. This method was largely replaced by basic oxygen furnaces and electric arc furnaces.
