Cupola
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-001496
A small, raised cabin or projection on the roof of a railway caboose or certain types of locomotives, providing an elevated vantage point for crew members to observe the train. This feature allowed for better visibility of the train's length, especially for detecting issues like hotboxes or shifting loads. Modern cabooses and locomotives have largely replaced cupolas with end platforms or advanced monitoring systems.
