Running board

A narrow platform extending along the side of a locomotive or railway car, providing a foothold for crew members to move along the vehicle while it is stationary or moving at low speeds. These boards are typically equipped with handrails for safety. They are particularly common on older steam locomotives and some freight cars for inspection and coupling tasks.
