Running shed

A building or facility where locomotives are housed, serviced, and prepared for their next duty between operational runs. Activities performed include refueling, inspection, cleaning, and light maintenance tasks that do not require the locomotive to be taken out of service for an extended period. Larger facilities with heavy repair capabilities are known as locomotive works or backshops.
