Coupling rod

A rigid bar connecting the driving wheels of a locomotive, transmitting power from one wheel to another. This mechanical linkage synchronizes the rotation of multiple axles, distributing the tractive effort across several wheels. Coupling rods are typically found on steam locomotives and some older diesel or electric locomotives with multiple powered axles.
