Doubling time
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003423
The period of time required for a quantity, such as a microbial cell population or the concentration of a substance, to double in size or value under specified conditions. It is a key parameter in microbiology for characterizing the growth rate of a particular organism in a given culture medium. For exponentially growing populations, the doubling time (td) is calculated as the natural logarithm of 2 divided by the specific growth rate (μ).
