Downconversion

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003424

The process where a high-energy photon is absorbed by a material, and its energy is subsequently re-emitted as two or more lower-energy photons. This phenomenon is observed in certain phosphors and semiconductor nanocrystals. The total energy of the emitted photons is less than or equal to the energy of the absorbed photon, with the difference often dissipated as heat.
