Octaves
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008192
A doubling interval on a logarithmic scale. In acoustics and spectroscopy, one octave is a doubling of frequency, so 100 Hz to 200 Hz spans one octave. In ecology, octaves are log2 abundance classes of 1 to 2, 2 to 4, 4 to 8 individuals and so on, used to plot species-abundance curves, each class doubling the number of individuals per species.
