Octanol-water partition ratio

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008191

The ratio of the concentration of a chemical in n-octanol to its concentration in water at equilibrium and a specified temperature. This ratio, often expressed as log P, is a measure of a compound's lipophilicity or hydrophobicity. It is widely used in pharmacology and environmental science to predict a substance's distribution in biological systems or the environment.
