Partition constant
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-008520
The equilibrium constant for the distribution of a solute between two immiscible phases, expressed as the ratio of the activities of the solute in each phase. Unlike the partition coefficient, which uses concentrations, the partition constant is a thermodynamic quantity. It provides a more fundamental measure of the solute's preference for one phase over another.
