Self-shielding

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-010715

The reduction in the effective neutron flux within a sample due to the absorption of neutrons by the sample itself. This effect is more pronounced in samples with high concentrations of neutron-absorbing nuclides or in larger samples. It can lead to an underestimation of the true concentration of an analyte in neutron activation analysis.
