Superexchange interaction

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-011599

A long-range magnetic coupling between two non-adjacent paramagnetic centers that is mediated through a bridging, diamagnetic ligand or anion. The electron spins on the magnetic centers interact indirectly via the orbitals of the intervening atom or group, rather than through direct orbital overlap. The strength and nature of this coupling are highly dependent on the angle of the bond between the magnetic centers and the bridging ligand.
