Bridging ligand

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-001502

A ligand that simultaneously coordinates to two or more metal centers, linking them together within a coordination complex. This type of bonding is common in polynuclear complexes and metal clusters. The presence of a bridging ligand is denoted in a chemical formula or name by the Greek letter mu (μ) placed before the ligand's name, with a subscript indicating the number of metal atoms it bridges, such as μ2 for bridging two centers.
