Superfamily

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-013615

A large grouping of proteins or genes believed to have diverged from a distant common ancestor. Members of a superfamily share structural similarities and conserved functional domains, even when their primary amino acid or nucleotide sequences show little overall similarity. The immunoglobulin superfamily, which includes antibodies and T-cell receptors, is a prominent example in immunology.
