Zeeman effect

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010313

The splitting of a single atomic spectral line into multiple, closely spaced components when the light source is subjected to an external magnetic field. This phenomenon occurs because the magnetic field alters the energy levels of the atom's electrons, creating several possible transitions with slightly different energies. The magnitude of the line separation is directly proportional to the strength of the magnetic field, a principle used to measure solar and stellar magnetic fields.
