Restoring

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008543

To return an atmospheric or oceanic system to a state of equilibrium after a perturbation. This process involves forces or mechanisms that act to counteract deviations from a stable state, such as buoyancy forces acting on a parcel of air displaced vertically. For example, a stable atmosphere exhibits restoring forces that push a displaced air parcel back towards its original level.
