Stable motion

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009175

The characteristic of an atmospheric system or fluid parcel to return to its initial state or equilibrium position after being perturbed. This occurs when restoring forces are stronger than the perturbing forces, leading to oscillations around the equilibrium rather than continued displacement. In the atmosphere, stable motion often results in layered clouds or suppressed vertical development.
