Stable wave

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009178

A type of atmospheric wave that, once generated, does not grow in amplitude but rather maintains its form or decays over time. These waves occur in stably stratified atmospheres where restoring forces, such as buoyancy, act to dampen any vertical displacement. Lee waves formed downwind of mountains are often stable waves.
