Static energy
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-009213
The sum of the internal energy and potential energy per unit mass of an air parcel, often expressed as the sum of specific enthalpy and geopotential height. This quantity is conserved for adiabatic, unsaturated vertical displacements in a hydrostatic atmosphere. It is a key concept in evaluating atmospheric stability and the potential for vertical motion.
The sum of internal energy, potential energy, and sometimes latent heat energy per unit mass of an air parcel. These quantities are conserved during adiabatic processes, providing insight into atmospheric stability and parcel movement. The moist static energy includes the latent heat of condensation, while dry static energy does not.
