Equivalent potential vorticity
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010498
A conserved quantity for an air parcel undergoing saturated, pseudo-adiabatic motion, analogous to how potential vorticity is conserved in dry adiabatic flow. It is defined using equivalent potential temperature instead of potential temperature, which accounts for the effects of latent heat release from condensation. Because it is conserved in moist ascending air, equivalent potential vorticity is a powerful diagnostic tool for analyzing the development of storms and cyclones where moist processes are dominant.
