Liquid water potential temperature

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006995

A thermodynamic variable that represents the potential temperature an air parcel would have if all its liquid water were evaporated and its temperature adjusted adiabatically to a reference pressure, typically 1000 hPa. This quantity is conserved during moist adiabatic processes where liquid water is present, making it useful for tracing air parcels in cloudy environments. It accounts for the latent heat released or absorbed during phase changes of water.
