Formaldehyde

A chemical compound, HCHO, sometimes used in drilling fluids as a biocide to inhibit bacterial growth. It is effective in preventing the degradation of organic additives and souring of the mud system. Due to its toxicity, its use is often restricted or replaced by less hazardous alternatives in many drilling operations.
