Carbonyl compounds
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004173
A class of organic molecules that contain a carbonyl functional group, which consists of a carbon atom joined to an oxygen atom by a double bond. These compounds, including aldehydes like formaldehyde and ketones like acetone, are prevalent in the atmosphere as products of photochemical oxidation of hydrocarbons. Their high reactivity influences the formation of ozone and secondary organic aerosols.
