Alkanes
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003435
A class of saturated hydrocarbons consisting only of carbon and hydrogen atoms joined by single bonds, forming a homologous series with the general formula CnH2n+2. In the atmosphere, alkanes are emitted from both natural sources, such as vegetation, and anthropogenic sources, like fossil fuel combustion. They are relatively unreactive but can undergo oxidation to form other atmospheric pollutants.
