Alkalinity

A measure of the capacity of water to neutralize acids, primarily due to the presence of bicarbonate, carbonate, and hydroxide ions. In atmospheric science, it often relates to the buffering capacity of aerosols or precipitation against acidic pollutants. This property is expressed in units such as milliequivalents per liter or milligrams per liter of calcium carbonate equivalent.
