Alkalinity

Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-000391

The quantitative capacity of an aqueous solution to neutralize an acid, primarily due to the presence of bicarbonate, carbonate, and hydroxide ions. It is a measure of the buffering capacity of water against pH changes. Alkalinity is typically expressed in units of milligrams of calcium carbonate per liter (mg CaCO3/L).
